The second iteration of Ailsa Bay single malt, replacing the version released in 2016, is both peatier and sweeter than its predecessor. It has, however, gone through the same micro-maturation process as the first edition - one that sees the spirit first filled into smaller-than-average bourbon casks for six to nine months, a process which accelerates maturation before it is then transferred into more traditional casks for several years.
Ailsa Bay Sweet Smoke has notes of damp heather, vanilla oak, creamy toffee and candied orange peel.

Nose
Fresh wood smoke with notes of smouldering damp heather and an extinguished bonfire. Following the smoke is a wave of oaky sweetness and vanilla oak, candied orange peel.

Taste
Beautifully-balanced peat and rich vanilla oakiness, this second batch has maintained the same intriguing flavour meandering between smoke, fruit and creamy toffee, this extra maturation period has developed deeper toasty oak notes with every sip.

Yes I tried ! As a lover of smoked single malts, I found this one totally interesting, thanks to the other fragrances in the background, nevertheless well present (vanilla, orange, chocolate,..) in very well balanced additional notes. A very good surprise !

I tried this at a friend's today and was really impressed. I generally gravitate towards smokier whiskies such as Ardbeg but this was much more subtle. A gentle caress of smoke but with a sweetness which I hadn't been expecting. Overall I felt that it was a particularly good fusion of styles and one which I'll seek out in future.

The nose I can best describe as like a marshmallow toasted on a campfire. The smoke is subtle at first. The initial mouth is pepper followed by a sweet citrus peel. It finishes and lingers like a typical Islay had had a bath in honey.

Everyone's saying "smooth". I've tried it a few times now and the first thing that strikes me when I taste it is the strong peppery spice that cuts through, even with a few drops of water added. Good whisky, but nothing too special. Oaky, toffee, peppery spice, citrus and a hint of nail varnish remover on the nose.
